research essay

As an alternative to the final exam, I'm offering a research essay option for those who are so inclined.

The aim of this assignment is to provide a focused, extended argument about one of the works from the periods of English literature covered during this semester. By incorporating critical sources, you will show that you not only have the ability to complete scholarly research but that you also understand the importance of entering the critical discussion of literary works from our past. The essay must be thesis-driven, organized, and coherent in its position and should defend its argument through detailed textual analysis. All topics for this essay must be approved in keeping with the deadlines indicated below.

Please note that you may not recycle an essay written for another class.

requirements:
  • engagement with at least one work from our reading schedule as a primary source (or approval of something not on our schedule)
  • at least 5 critical, scholarly sources (from peer-reviewed journals), integrated to support the argument you make rather than serving as the basis of it (in other words, do not summarize what others have written and indicate that you agree with them)
  • MLA citation format, including parenthetical, in-text citations and a complete Works Cited page
  • at least four complete, typed pages, using 12-point Times New Roman Font and standards of MLA formatting (for additional details on the Purdue OWL)
  • topic approval: a 150-word abstract that articulates the argument of the essay sent via email to leigh.dillard@ung.edu by the deadline below
important dates:
  • topic approval: ___, 11:59 p.m. ** essays without topic approval will be dropped a letter grade
  • due date: 12 December 2018, 11:59 p.m. (the same day as the final exam)
I welcome discussion on this essay and will be happy to help students during the drafting process, either f2f or via Skype.
